"Einee minee minee moe..."

Remember when decisions about everything important in life could be settled with a couple of simple rhymes - wishing, hoping and leaving your fate in the hands of the Tooth Fairy?

If you dropped food on the floor, you had the "five-second rule".

If some kid at school bothered you, you wished they'd fall off their bike. And it usually happened. It didn't matter that statistically it was bound to happen. You felt all powerful... that is, unless you didn't want that responsibility. Then you could opt out. After all, "stuff happens"; and besides, you were just a kid.

Fast forward to adulthood and the real world with your financial responsibilities - car payments, student loans, mortgages, credit card bills, you name it. And - who knows - maybe you've tried to wish them away!

How's that working for you?

You're employed and working on a regular basis - and hopefully you're not on the verge of joining the 10.2% of the population who are currently unemployed as of January 2011. That's a 26-year high. You may be scraping by on a salary, or you may be doing well; but you'd like to do better. You've considered part-time work, but let's face it: there are only 24 hours in a day. As you think it through and look at all the possibilities, you've probably come across the idea of being self-employed. Let's look at some of the realities:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says...
Out of 100 people who start working at the age of 25, by the age of 65...

  • 1 is wealthy
  • 4 have enough money to retire
  • 63 depend on social security or charity
  • 29 are deceased

In other words, 95% of people age 65 or over cannot afford to retire and work until they die!! What happened to safety and security?!

Entrepreneur Magazine estimates that $427 billion is generated each year by home-based businesses. That's bigger than General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler all together. That's more than the pharmaceutical industry, food industry and consumer goods industry - COMBINED.

According to IDC, home-based businesses create an estimated 8,500 new jobs daily. The Small Business Administration says today more than half (53%) of the small businesses in the U.S. are home-based. In pure numbers, that's more than 24 million businesses!

The extremely low start-up costs, flexible hours, and the Internet are fueling the growth of the home business segment. It's estimated that as many as 150 million people, in North America alone, are enjoying the freedom and benefits of owning their own home-based business.

From a survey done by Home Office Computing Magazine:

  • 98% are happier working from home
  • 96% would recommend working from home
  • 88% would never return to the corporate world

About 70% of home-based business will last over a three-year period, compared to 29% of other business ventures, according to the Home-Based Business Institute. 89% with household incomes greater than $80,000 have a home office compared to 14% of those with incomes below $25,000. A recent IDC survey indicates that the average income for income-generating home office households is $63,000 a year.

Check out these miscellaneous home-based business statistics!

  • Every 11 seconds someone starts a home-based business
  • Over the next 5 years, in the United States alone, the number of people who work out of their homes will increase
  • The number of home-based businesses will triple
  • 1 out of 3 Americans will be working out of their home
  • There is a 95% survival rate for new businesses
  • Spare time turns into full-time for 50% home-based business owners
  • 40 to 44% of all home-based businesses require less than $5,000 for startup

Now you're convinced.

So how to start? Because there are so many choices in network marketing business opportunities, you could revert to childhood and say "einee minee minee moe". But as you have discovered, it didn't work then and it won't work now. You're going to have to do some investigating.

Next month, we'll talk about how to evaluate these companies and how to decide which one(s) deserve your attention.

Remember what Walt Disney said: "If you can dream it, you can do it."
